This season’s final gathering of the Toronto Poetry Slam series – the competition heats up in March with the commencement of the semi-finals – gets underway on Friday night at the Drake Hotel’s Underground lounge (1150 Queen Street West). Although the event starts at 8 p.m. you should probably get there an hour early as the event has been selling out lately. Sign-ups for the on-stage slam start at 7:30 and admission is $5. Sunday afternoon will find kids, parents, and kids-at-heart gathering the second annual Totsapalooza event at Revival (783 College Street). The outer-space-themed event mashes music, kids’ lit, arts and crafts, and junk food and begins at 1:30 p.m. Adult admission is $10, kids $8, with advance tickets available online at the Small Print website. If mystery and detective fiction is more to your taste, one of the world’s masters of the genre, Henning Mankell, is giving a free reading at the Toronto Reference Library (789 Yonge Street) at 2 p.m.
