Hitting the Ground Reading: The Week in Books Events

The stage meets the page tonight at Buddies in Bad Times Theatre (12 Alexander Street) with a selection of readings from OutSpoken: A Canadian Collection of Lesbian Scenes and Monologues, edited by Now Senior Entertainment Editor Susan G. Cole. The event will feature Trey Anthony, Mariko Tamaki, Jess Dobkins and other anthology contributors reading from the book (7 p.m., FREE). Over at the Rowers Pub Reading Series (150 Harbord Street, 7:30 p.m., FREE), poets Di Brandt, Dayle Furlong and Matthew Tierney all read from recent work at the monthly reading series.

On Tuesday, the weekly Artbar Poetry Series at Clinton’s (693 Bloor Street West) features Sankofa, Bunny Iskov and Bruce Meyer followed by the popular open mic segment (8 p.m., FREE). In the west end, the Brocton Writers Series at Zoots Cafe (1438 Dundas Street West) has local authors Carey Toane, teenah edan and Monica Rosas reading from 7 p.m. until 9 (FREE). Coffee and snacks will be on sale.

Wednesday night at The Pilot/Stealth Lounge (22 Cumberland Street), Lilly Barnes launches her new novel, Mara, with a reading from the book and musical entertainment from The Daniel Barnes Trio and Micah Barnes (7 p.m., FREE). Culturshoc (1205 Queen Street West) is the hump-night venue for the (In)side the Veins series, featuring a poetry open mic and workshop (8 p.m., FREE).

Two Thursday night events round out the pre-weekend lit calendar. Adventurer, kayaker, environmentalist and author Jon Turk launches his latest book, The Raven’s Gift, at the Dora Keogh Traditional Irish Pub (141 Danforth Avenue, 7 p.m., FREE), while Hassan Santur presents his debut novel, Something Remains, at the Gladstone (1214 Queen Street West) at 7 p.m. (FREE).
